Flora & Fauna

The coastal woods are dominated by palms, mangroves, copal spruces, teak and sandalwood trees. In the lowlands up to a height of about 900 metres there are large numbers of monkey-bread trees and acacias. Typical for the vegetation in the altitudes between 900 and 2,700 metres are the widespread savannas which are interspersed with occasional acacia and papyrus woods.

Kenya is famous for its spectacular animal world, especially the large mammals in the savannas. Included in this group are the elephants, the rhinos, the zebras, the gazelles, the giraffes, the lions, the leopards, the cheetahs, the wild dogs, the hyenas and the jackals. The bird world also consists of diverse species; flamingos, shoebills, marabous, rhino-birds and different kingfishers are amongst the varieties living there.
