Travel preparations

Passport
A passport which is still valid for a period of 6 months on the date of entry into the country is necessary. Children need their own document, also bearing a photograph.

Visa
On entering the country a visa costing € 40 that is 50 US dollars (situation in October 2007) can be purchased at the airport. This visa can also be applied for the appropriate embassy before leaving for Kenya.

Sunburn protection measures / First aid kit
Besides sun protection cream and your own personal first aid kit it is advisable to take a remedy for diarrhoea as there can be problems due to change in climate. No inoculations are necessary for those flying directly into the country. For those entering the country via a yellow fever endemic disease country (e.g. Central Africa or South America) proof of a valid inoculation against yellow fever is necessary. Bear this in mind, especially if you are planning a round trip through several countries. In principle, medication as a prophylactic measure against malaria is recommendable. Please consult your doctor or local general practitioner. An insect protection cream, suitable for tropical climates, should not be missing from any travel luggage. In Mombasa there are several hospitals which are of a European standard. As there is no social security agreement with Kenya, a travel health insurance policy should be taken out additionally.

Methods of payment
The local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES),  whereby €1 corresponds 90 KES (situation in October  2007). It is advisable to take US dollar traveller's cheques. In Severin Sea Lodge it is possible to pay with euros or with accepted credit cards (Visa / American Express / Diners Club and Eurocard / Mastercard).

Luggage / Clothing
Light summer clothing, primarily made out of cotton, is preferable. Comfortable shoes as well as a warm pullover for the evenings are necessary for a safari. Otherwise do not forget to include adequate film and photograph supplies as well as a pair of binoculars. Sun protection cream with a high factor, a good pair of sunglasses and something to cover your head with are also a necessity.
