Severin Sea Lodge wins Travelife Gold Medal Award for sustainable tourism

Sundern, 04.11.09 - Severin Sea Lodge, located close to Mombasa in Kenya, received the »Travelife Gold« award for green and sustainable tourism. The hotel has been active in environmental issues for over 20 years and follows sustainable and future-oriented hotel operations. A first important step was the installation of a waste water treatment plant in 1995, which was built to European standards. In this way, the entire water from the rooms, the kitchen and the laundry can be cleaned biologically.

Travelife delivers industry-wide standards for sustainability management systems and provides best practice guidance and support for the companies implementing them through the provision of training, tools and references. An initiative created by tour operators and part-funded by the European Union, Travelife has been set up to support an efficient and cost effective introduction of sustainability principles. It aims to increase the quality of travel products, customer satisfaction and the quality of life in the holiday destinations. In the Travelife Sustainable tourism survey, hotels are scored Bronze, Silver or Gold depending on the degree of their environmental commitment. Hotels like Severin Sea Lodge that achieve the Gold Status, display advanced sustainability and eco tourism actions. They encourage others to be involved, seek continual improvements and actively communicate their progress.

We firmly believe that the private sector has to sometimes lead the way and work together with perspective governments in making sure we lower our impact on the environment. Therefore at Severin Sea Lodge, staff and guests are trained in specifically organized seminars to get information about the environmental threats and the protection of Kenya's coast and national parks. With illustrated charts which have been designed together with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), tourists get to know a lot about Africa's natural treasures.

The hotel's warm water supply is supported by 300 square meters of solar panels. Kenya's sunny climate is well suited for this clean form of energy. Vegetables, fruits, chicken and eggs come from the hotel's own bio farm without the use of artificial fertilizer.
