Sundern, December 2010: Severin Safari Camp****s, located in Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, received the famous Travelife Gold Award for green and sustainable tourism.

Travelife delivers industry-wide standards for sustainability management systems and provides best practice guidance and support for the companies implementing them through the provision of training, tools and references. An initiative created by tour operators and part-funded by the European Union, Travelife has been set up to support an efficient and cost effective introduction of sustainability principles. It aims to increase the quality of travel products, customer satisfaction and the quality of life in the holiday destinations. In the Travelife Sustainable tourism survey, hotels are scored Bronze, Silver or Gold depending on the degree of their environmental commitment. Achieving a Travelife Award is not easy and requires a good result from the Travelife Audit. This involves a visit from an auditor, who looks at employment records and energy bills, interviews staff, and inspects the property thoroughly to ensure excellent management of energy and water, chemical usage and community relations - to mention a few.

Severin Safari Camp has been carefully constructed to minimize the impact on the fragile Tsavo West ecosystem; we utilize solar technology whenever possible, have implemented strict waste management system and have a biological waste water treatment plant. Waste water from tents and the kitchen is collected and filtered through lava stones, gravel and sand. It is important for us to educate our guests and staff to safeguard the environment and nature. We ensure all driver guides and guests abide the park rules of Kenya Wildlife Service and keep to the stipulated roads.
