Sundern, October 2010 - Relaxation during holidays and an intact environment just belong together. This is why TUI has already awarded their best holiday resorts with regard to environmental and future-orientated management since 1996. In 2010, TUI again determined the 100 best eco hotels and awarded them with the TUI Environmental Champion Award.

The hotels are inspected on-site and with a check-list by specially trained persons. Besides the commitment to environmental protection like the implementation of energy- and water-saving activities, also the social commitment of the hotels has been examined. Especially the fair treatment of employees and the local people came to the fore.

The basis for the examination was the checklist developed by Travelife (www.travelife.eu). Additionally, the rating by TUI guests with regard to environmental protection activities made 25% of the appraisement.

Severin Sea Lodge, located close to Mombasa in Kenya, was again awarded „TUI Environmental Champion" this year. The hotel meets the requirements of an ecological tourism and has developed a program for environmental protection that has been rewarded repeatedly. It was the first hotel that installed a biological waste water treatment plant and integrated solar technology into its infrastructure.

Beyond our commitment to environmental protection we also support the orphanage Mji Wa Salama in order to contribute to the improvement of general living conditions and future perspectives of children in Mombasa. The driving force is Cornelia Schulte who is the wife of the chairman of Severin_touristik.
