An interview with the new General Manager: Andrew Muir of Severin Sea Lodge

Sundern/Kenya, 4th April 2008.  Andrew Muir was born in Nairobi, Kenya, 1955. His father is British and his mother Dutch. In 1978 Andrew went into the hotel industry and trained with the De Vere Group in UK. In 1980 he joined the family business in Kenya and even worked together with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the film »Out of Africa«. He went back into hotels in 1990 and has worked in Kenya, Sri Lanka, England and Tanzania. He is married and has two children: one son and one daughter.

When did you start at Severin Sea Lodge?
I started on the 17th March 2008.

How did you come to be General Manager of the hotel?
Ever since Severin Sea Lodge introduced the first water recycling plant system to be used by a hotel in East Africa, they have always been leaders in showing the way forward as an example to the rest of the Tourist Industry in Kenya. It is a privilege to be now part of this group.

What are your expectations?
The most important persons in our hotels are the guests, it is our aim to get the staff to look at every new guest coming through our doors and say to themselves »How do I get them to come back again«. With this attitude we will be able to ensure good top service at all times.

What are your targets for the next years?

  • The Kenya tourism industry suffered a great blow at the beginning of the year. We need to collectively give the assurance to all our visitors that Kenya is back on track and our goals are to increase our repeater clientele. To do this we have to ensure that we still give »Good Value« for service and quality.
  • Severin_kenya has been the leader in eco-tourism. With global warming being even a greater threat we will also still be innovative in showing the way to our fellow competitors.
  • The motto »A Great holiday with a difference« means that we want to make sure that our guests remember us as different to other hotels and camps. The personal touch is so important to make sure that we do stand out from the crowd.
