The book
»Tsavo« is the largest National Park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. Author Nana Grosse-Woodley who’s living in Kenya has dedicated her book Tsavo Trilogy to the unique ecosystem of the Tsavo National Park. Within the three volumes » Stories Book«, »Nature & Landscape Book« and »Travel Log Book« the reader gets to know every important fact about this exceptional National Park and its history.
The »Stories Book« (256 pages) is a compilation of chronological events and history around the Tsavo and includes a foldable historical map with all the places mentioned in the stories. The »Nature and Landscape Book« (136 pages) is all about the geology, fauna and flora of Tsavo. It shows the latest and most detailed comprehensive lists of fauna and flora, about 60 colour illustrations, and the foldable chart in the back is an updated Tsavo West map. The »Travel Log Book« (72 pages) is meant as a personal diary whilst visiting Tsavo West and has some nice African sayings and poems – all relevant to Tsavo - spread out between empty pages meant for personal notes. The foldable map in the back shows a satellite image of the Tsavo West area.
The author
Nana Grosse-Woodley, qualified photographer by trade, has lived with her husband, Daniel Woodley, in different parts of Tsavo for the past 12 years. They have recently moved to Kamboyo headquarters of Tsavo West, of which Daniel is the Senior Warden for Kenya Wildlife Service, an organization who manages the National Parks and Reserves in Kenya.
The publisher
Severin Schulte came out to Kenya on a visit as a child and since then had the dream of running a camp in Tsavo. He has recently realised that dream by renovating the old Kitani Bandas and building Severin Safari Camp in Tsavo West, which currently is undergoing works for upgrading. The Tsavo Trilogy was Severin’s brain child.
First publication in English language: December 2008

Kenya offers a variety of National Parks which stretch over an area of about 50,000 sqkm. Within the parks, all different habitats are existing, from desert to mountain forests and water protection areas at the Indian Ocean. The »Kenya Wildlife Service« (KWS) manages all parks. In this newsletter we will present you the Masai Mara.
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara (also spelled Maasai Mara or Massai Mara) with its 1510 km² is a large park reserve in South-Western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park game reserve in Tanzania. It is named after the Maasai people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and the Mara River, which divides it. The Mara is perhaps most famous for its lions. All other members of the »Big Five« are to be fount in the park as well. Further predators are for example cheetahs, jackals, crocodiles and hippos at the Mara River, giraffes as well as huge groups of zebras and different types of antelopes.
The Masai Mara is famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebras and the wildebeests from the Serengeti every year from July to October, a migration so immense it is called the »Great Migration«. These numerous migrants are followed along their annual, circular route by a block of hungry predators, most notably lions and hyenas. |
Award: TUI Environmental Champion |
The »TUI Environmental Champion Award« is given to properties with an eco-friendly and future-oriented hotel management since 1996. These criterions are very important to a lot of guests regarding their choice of hotel for the most beautiful time of the year. The awarded hotels are listed in the »TUI Schöne Ferien« brochure and on the »Internet« (tui.com).
The price-winning properties are determined by a certified process which is based on a combination of guests review and the reality check of the actions taken for environmental protection.
Severin Sea Lodge gets the »TUI Environmental Champion Award« on a regular basis since 1997.

Today our cook from Severin Sea Lodge presents you a typical African meal and reveals about how to cook it at home. This time, we have Mtuza wa Samaki (Baked curried fish) on our menu card.
Ingredients
Serves 4 persons
2 lbs. white fish, bones removed
3 large yellow onions, sliced
2 tblsp. oil
2 chili peppers or 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
3 cloves garlic
4 medium-size tomatoes, or 6 oz. tomato paste
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. salt
Method
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Lay the fish in a baking pan.
3. Heat oil to a moderate temperature and fry the onion slices until they are transparent.
4. Arrange over the fish.
5. Combine the remaining ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. (Or crush chilies and garlic with a mortar and pestle and mash tomatoes well with a fork before combining with other ingredients.)
6. Pour over fish, cover the pot, and simmer about 30 minutes until fish is just cooked.
Bon appetit!
Yours
Philip Saisi |
