The authority is established under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) No. 8 of 1999, as the principal instrument of government in Kenya in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment.

Severin Sea Lodge and Severin Safari Camp received the »Travelife Gold« award for green and sustainable tourism. Travelife delivers industry-wide standards for sustainability management systems and provides best practice guidance and support for the companies implementing them through the provision of training, tools and references.
