With about 800.000 inhabitants Mombasa is the second largest city of Kenya and at the same time the most important seaport in East Africa. The island city Mombasa with its 13 square kilometres is located at the Southern border directly at the Indian Ocean.
Only a bridge connects it with the land and it is framed by two estuaries like a wonderful jewel. When they arrived in 1498, the Portugueses were so impressed by the high living standard of the Swahili population, that they built Fort Jesus right at the entrance of the Old Harbour from 1593-1595.
The fort with its exciting history is located on a coral reef community and towers above the entrance to the Old Harbour. Another landmark is the Old Town which was built during the 19th century. Tiny streets and lanes, mosques and temples, front doors ornate with brass, the old dhow harbour and glamorous colonial buildings represent the unique character of this district. Optically, Mombasa seems like a tropical paradise with countless coconut palms and almost endless sandy beaches. Luxurious hotels border the beaches which stretch across the North and the South of the island.
